A Lahore man, Muhammad Afzal, has been rescued after surviving for 15 days in the mountains of the historic Mintika Pass near the Pak-China border. Afzal, who was part of a group attempting to illegally cross into China, was found by four men from Misgar village.
While his five companions were arrested by Chinese authorities, Afzal managed to escape and became lost. He survived on water and grass before being discovered in a semi-conscious state, suffering from severe dehydration and exposure.
His rescuers carried him on their backs for two days before getting help from police and other authorities. Afzal is now in police custody, where he is being treated for his injuries. An investigation is underway into the attempted border crossing and Afzal's allegations that his companions abandoned him after stealing his money and phone.
