GB Assembly demands provincial status for region
GILGIT: The Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) Assembly on Tuesday passed a joint resolution, demanding that the region be granted the status of a province of Pakistan and provided representation in the National Assembly, Senate and other federal institutions.
The resolution was jointly tabled by members of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Pakistan Muslim League-N, Pakistan People's Party (PPP), Majlis-e-Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) and Jamiat. Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) during the Assembly session chaired by its Speaker Advocate Nazir Ahmed

The resolution said that the GB, as per the wishes of the people, demanded from the House that the federal government, Prime Minister Imran Khan and other state institutions grant GB the status of a provisional province of Pakistan and the GB in the National Assembly, Senate. The resolution also demanded that a bill be passed in Parliament to amend the Constitution of Pakistan to make the GB a temporary province without compromising the country's position on the Kashmir issue under UN resolutions.
The resolution further said that this House reiterated that the people of GB would continue to provide moral and political support to the Indian-administered Kashmiri people in their struggle for self-determination.
The resolution was passed unanimously by the House.
According to a notification, the GB Assembly Secretariat also sent a copy of the resolution to the Prime Minister's Secretariat.
GB Chief Minister Khalid Khurshid Khan said in a tweet that the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly unanimously passed a landmark resolution calling for the provision of constitutional rights to the area. "I personally introduced this resolution in the assembly. He said in a tweet that he was grateful to the opposition leaders for their support and also to the members of the government for their efforts to reach a consensus.
He said that the demand for constitutional rights was a unanimous demand of the people of GB, not of any individual or party. "The unity we have shown on this issue needs to be reiterated at the federal level," he tweeted.
Calling it a "historic day", Science and Technology Minister Fawad Chaudhry said it was "a boom". "Kadus [sic] for all those who made it possible," he said on Twitter.
Earlier, just before the GB Assembly elections on November 1 last year, Prime Minister Imran Khan announced the status of GB as a province of Pakistan.
