Remembering Asmatullah Mushfiq: Wakhi Historian, Poet, and Religious Scholar

On October 20, 2024, the  Wakhi-speaking community and the region of Chipurson Gojal lost Asmatullah Mushfiq, a prominent historian, poet, and religious scholar from Chapursan Valley, Gojal, Hunza. At 95 years old, Mushfiq was a beacon of Wakhi culture, language, and spiritual teachings, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations.



Khalifa Asmatullah Mushfiq is best known for composing over 1,000 Wakhi kalams (poems), which reflected his deep faith and devotion to his people. His works were not just poetry; they were a cultural treasure, preserving the Wakhi language and its unique expression of spirituality. Mushfiq also played a key role in various Imamati institutions, where he served with dedication in leadership positions, guiding both religious and cultural initiatives.


In addition to his poetry, Mushfiq made a significant contribution to historical literature. His book, Tarikhey Baba Ghundi, published on March 19, 2016, highlights the life of Baba Ghundi, a revered Sufi saint in the region. The book remains a crucial resource for those interested in the spiritual history of the Wakhi people and their connection to Sufism.


Asmatullah Mushfiq’s scholarly and spiritual contributions to the Wakhi-speaking community and beyond have made him a beloved figure. His passing is a great loss, but his influence will live on through his written works and the many lives he touched through his poetry and teachings. His dedication to preserving the history and culture of his people has ensured that future generations will remember and honor the Wakhi heritage.
